Mahama Ayariga, Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, has sharply condemned the brutal treatment meted out to civilians—including women, children, the elderly, and youth—in parts of the Bawku Municipality on the night of Tuesday, March 18, 2025.
In a forceful statement, Ayariga vowed to demand full accountability from the military for their actions.
According to Ayariga, the military’s conduct is entirely unacceptable. “While I deeply regret the accidental killing of a military personnel by an unknown gunman—a deplorable act that I also condemn—the ransacking, beating, and hostage-like tactics imposed on innocent civilians are equally intolerable,” he said.
The MP stressed that those entrusted with maintaining law and order should uphold the rule of law, not violate it.
Ayariga called on both local leadership and the military to work together in investigating the killing of the military personnel.
He criticized the military command for disregarding his earlier appeal to refrain from violent reprisals following the tragic incident.
“We need to work together,” he urged, adding that a collaborative investigation is essential to uncover the truth behind the killing instead of resorting to further violence.
Extending his condolences to the bereaved family of the fallen military member, Ayariga also expressed sympathy for all victims of Tuesday night’s violence.
He warned that such actions set a dangerous precedent and undermine public trust in the institutions meant to protect citizens.
Expressing confidence in traditional leadership, the MP noted, “I have confidence that all sides will repose confidence in His Majesty the Asantehene Otumfuo Nana Osei Tutu II to bring finality to the situation in Bawku and end the violence we are experiencing.”
As the situation in Bawku remains tense, calls for thorough investigations and military accountability continue to grow, with local leaders and community members urging a return to the principles of justice and respect for human rights.
