A violent attack on students of Salaga Senior High School (SHS) in the East Gonja Municipality of the Savannah Region has left one student unconscious and hospitalized, while several others, mostly boys from Salaga township, have fled the school with their whereabouts currently unknown.
According to community sources, the incident occurred on Thursday, February 6, when a group of students from Salaga marched to the headmaster’s office, demanding the release of three students who had been arrested following an earlier altercation between two rival groups.
The students argued that the arrests were biased and insisted that individuals from the opposing group involved in the previous Saturday’s clash should also be detained for fairness.
When the headmaster declined their request, tensions escalated, and the students began hurling stones in protest.
The chaos soon attracted youth from Kpembe, a nearby suburb, who stormed the school and launched an assault on the students, leaving one severely injured.
Despite the severity of the attack, no arrests have been made so far. However, police officers have been deployed to the school to restore order and ensure the safety of students and staff.
Background
Twenty students were arrested on Tuesday, February 4, following a violent clash at the school on Saturday that left one person seriously injured. 17 of those arrested have since been granted bail and are required to report periodically to the police.
The remaining three were to be processed for court.
Police also retrieved a locally manufactured gun.
According to sources, the dispute began on February 1, 2025, between two day students during an entertainment event.
The disagreement was later reported to their respective groups in Kpembe and Salaga townships, fueling tensions that led to the violent outburst.
A seven-member committee has been set up to investigate the incident, with findings expected to include the cause of the clash and recommendations for preventing similar occurrences in the future.
