Road accidents over the years have been major canker that is killing many people in Ghana, arguably more than any disease.
A report by the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service indicates, in 2021, between January 1 and July 31, up to 9,520 motor crashes involving 16,226 vehicles, 1,706 persons were killed and 9,299 others injured in those accidents.
Also from January to October 2020, there were nearly 12,100 road traffic accidents in the country which involved over 20,400 vehicles. The crashes led to 2,080 fatalities and 12,380 injuries.
In 2016 alone, more males than females were involved in road crashes. For this reason, the CEO of Off-Road Africa Adventure, Mr Amaka Okyere, has said Ghanaians should be responsible to help curb the accidents.
According to him, Ghanaians are fast dying via road crashes therefore should be responsible for their own lives in other to stop those accidents which are rampantly going up, day in day out.
He added that regular maintenance of the vehicle is very important therefore drivers and car owners should frequently check their vehicles.
The CEO said, drivers should limit speeding and wrongful overtaking since they are the main components of road crashes in Ghana.
He made this statement when the Off-Road Africa Adventure held what it is called “Africa Off-Road adventure” at Essienimpong in the Ejisu Municipality of the Ashanti Region.
