According to Denis Kwakwa, the Ashanti Regional Communication Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the Ashanti Region National Democratic Congress (NDC) is compelling Asantes out of the executive positions in the party.
In a press conference in Kumasi, the NPP claims that recent developments in the NDC in the region have affirmed the findings of some party fanatics.
Mr Kwakwa thinks that, despite his NPP affiliation, this is not an issue that should be unfolding in the nation’s political organisation because the 1992 constitution forbids any type of ethnic discrimination.
In a Facebook post, Accra-based journalist Bobie Ansah alleged that the NDC is discriminating against Asantes in their ongoing membership registration drive, which ended in the region last week.
“Some leading figures within the opposition NDC have had cause to complain about the tribally discriminative attitude toward supporters perceived to be of Asante decent in the region.’’
“Persons bearing Asante names were denied the opportunity to register their membership whilst others are subjected to serious frustrations in their attempt to register for the party’s membership cards.’’
He stated that the NPP’s observation in the Ashanti region has been aided by Appiah Stadium, a close associate of former President John Dramani Mahama, who resounded similar feelings on Accra-based radio station Asempa FM.
‘‘Mr. Frank Kwaku Appiah, popularly known as Appiah Stadium, on Asempa Fm a few weeks ago also had cause to complain that one of the aspirants for the Ashanti regional communication officer position, Asafo Agyie is being discriminated against on the basis that he is an Asante.’’
‘‘We are not surprised at all at this development because the NDC, as we all know in their so many years of existence has always adopted tribalism as a major tool in their political bidding’’
‘‘What rather bothers the minds of well-meaning people in the Ashanti region is how deliberate and wicked the NDC has persistently angered and treated the Ashanti region as a kingdom and its citizens’’ he said.
‘‘You would recall that in the wake of the political campaign of the 2016 general elections, then sitting president and now former president, John Mahama, described Ashanti’s as ingrates who wouldn’t even appreciate gold overlaid roads. This was just not an insult but the greatest disrespect anyone could show to the Sikadwa’’ he retorted.
The NPP communication director is calling for some respect from the NDC in Ashanti region to Asantes, the region that gives them higher votes than all their stronghold combined.
‘one would have thought that after the 2020 elections, the NDC would have appreciated its members in the Ashanti region and Asantes for garnering into their basket over 600, 000 votes, second highest after greater Accra’’
‘‘Their so-called stronghold thus the volta and northern regions could not match Ashanti in their almost successful political scam they wanted to bring to the people of Ghana through the 2020 general elections. yet they are showing great discrimination and enmity against descendants of the great Ashanti land.’’
