Wontumi’s Lawyer calls for prayers as Court hears criminal cases
Legal counsel for New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has appealed to the public to pray for his client as he appears before the Accra High Court over ongoing criminal cases against him.
Speaking to journalists at the court premises on Tuesday, lawyer Andy Appiah-Kubi said the defence team is working diligently on the three cases but believes spiritual support is equally important as the legal process continues.
“The only thing is that we need prayers. We’re working hard on these three cases,” he stated.
He explained that one of the cases involving Ghana EXIM Bank had been adjourned for a month to allow the prosecution sufficient time to prepare and disclose documents intended for the defence.
Mr Appiah-Kubi also expressed confidence in the judicial process, stressing that the truth would become clearer once all parties are given the opportunity to fully present their cases before the court.
He further referenced biblical and legal principles, arguing that fairness requires every side to be heard before conclusions are drawn.
Meanwhile, court documents filed by the Prosecution Division of the Office of the Attorney-General on May 15, 2026, outline allegations of financial misconduct linked to Ghana EXIM Bank.
Chairman Wontumi, 50, together with Thomas Antwi-Boasiako, who is currently at large, and Wontumi Farms Limited, are facing four charges including defrauding by false pretences, uttering forged documents, money laundering, and intentionally causing financial loss to a public institution.
According to the charge sheet, the allegations involve altered financial receipts, alleged non-existent farming activities, and substantial financial loss to the state.
Chairman Wontumi was arrested, cautioned, and formally charged on May 14, 2026, before being arraigned before the High Court, where proceedings are ongoing.
