A woman believed to be in her mid-50s is in critical condition at the Nkwanta St Joseph Catholic Hospital after a road accident on the Nkwanta–Kpassa Highway in the eastern corridor of the Oti Region.
The accident involved a commercial vehicle travelling from Tamale to Hohoe with six passengers on board. The vehicle, which reportedly had no number plate, is said to have run into a pothole, causing a tyre to burst and leaving the vehicle badly damaged.
All six occupants sustained injuries of varying degrees and were rushed to the hospital for treatment. The woman, who suffered severe injuries to her face and forehead, is receiving urgent medical care and remains in a critical state.
Some of the passengers told the media that the driver had been speeding towards Hohoe after receiving calls that passengers were waiting to travel to Tamale. They said the crash occurred despite repeated pleas for the driver to reduce his speed.
The Municipal Chief Executive for Nkwanta, Joseph Antwi Awal, later visited the hospital to assess the situation and check on the condition of the injured passengers.
During the visit, he cautioned drivers and other road users to exercise restraint and adhere to speed limits, particularly when transporting passengers, in order to reduce the risk of road accidents.
