The Head of the IGP’s Special Operations Taskforce combating the rising illegal drug trade and abuse in the Northern Region, DSP Alhaji Jalil Bawah, has warned that some traditional rulers may soon be arrested and publicly exposed for their alleged involvement in the illicit drug business.
He clarified that the taskforce’s actions are not aimed at undermining the Overlord of Dagbon, Yaa Naa Abukari II, but rather intended to restore order and accountability, as some chiefs are believed to be complicit in perpetuating the menace.
Speaking at a public forum during a sensitisation exercise on the operations of the taskforce, DSP Bawah described illegal drug trafficking and consumption as a serious threat to society, urging all stakeholders to support efforts to rid the system of criminals destroying the future of the youth.
“We are not in the region to disgrace chiefs, but some chiefs are bent on destroying the future of our children. You cannot be a chief and harbour people who sell poison in your home and distribute it to others. Such chiefs will be named and shamed,” he stated.
He further warned that arrests are imminent, stressing that implicated chiefs will be handcuffed and made to account publicly for their roles in the illegal drug trade.
DSP Bawah also appealed to the youth to stay away from illegal drugs, cautioning that those who ignore the warning will face the taskforce as it works to restore the lost glory of Dagbon, a kingdom once held in high esteem.
He concluded by speaking on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, expressing appreciation to individuals and institutions supporting the fight against the drug menace.
