The Central Regional Police Command has arrested two individuals in connection with an attempt to smuggle 250 bags of cocoa beans out of Ghana. The arrests were made during a targeted intelligence-led operation in Elmina on Sunday, June 8, 2025.
In an official statement, the Police revealed that the operation was initiated following a tip-off received two weeks earlier, which indicated the existence of a syndicate involved in smuggling cocoa beans and illicit drugs from Elmina to neighboring countries.
At approximately 11:00 PM, officers intercepted a Hyundai Mighty truck with registration number CR 726-25, driven by suspect Andy Kwofie. A search of the vehicle revealed it was loaded with 250 bags of cocoa beans.
During initial interrogation, Kwofie disclosed that the shipment was intended for Francis Armah, who allegedly planned to transport the cocoa beans by sea to foreign destinations. Armah was arrested later the same night.
The truck has been impounded and is currently being held at the Regional Police Headquarters in Cape Coast. Both suspects remain in custody and are assisting with ongoing investigations.
The Police added that efforts are actively underway to identify and apprehend other members of the suspected smuggling syndicate.
Authorities have reaffirmed their commitment to cracking down on illegal smuggling operations that threaten Ghana’s economy and national interest.
