Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie’s legal battle with Ecobank Ghana PLC has been adjourned to July 25, 2025, according to a report by 3Music TV.
The case stems from an anti-fraud campaign launched by Ecobank in early 2025 as part of their #ItsGivingScam initiative. The campaign featured a man who closely resembles Sarkodie, accompanied by the caption, “Looks can be deceiving.”
Sarkodie claims the campaign misrepresented him and misled the public into thinking he was involved, despite being a brand ambassador for First National Bank, a competitor.
In March 2025, Sarkodie filed a lawsuit demanding that Ecobank cease use of the image, pull down all related materials, and offer compensation for violating his image and intellectual property rights.
Rumours surfaced in April suggesting Sarkodie had tried to withdraw the case but was refused by the bank.
However, his legal team, the Robert Smith Law Group, refuted those claims, calling them baseless and clarifying that Sarkodie never gave such an instruction.
“We have not received instructions from our client to withdraw the suit [and] we have taken no steps to withdraw the suit. The ignorance and malice of these infantile publications are betrayed by the fact that in civil proceedings, the Plaintiff does not need the consent of the defendant to discontinue the action if the Plaintiff has not been served with the Statement of Defence,” the statement said.
The case is now set to be heard on July 25, and public interest remains high as the battle between celebrity image rights and corporate campaigns continues to unfold.
