Former President John Dramani Mahama has visited the Central Business District of Adum in Kumasi, Ashanti Region, to assess the aftermath of a massive fire that destroyed hundreds of shops.
The blaze, which erupted in the early hours of Friday, March 21, left many traders devastated as they scrambled to salvage their goods amid the chaos.
During his visit, Mahama interacted with affected traders, offering his sympathy and pledging his support. He emphasized the urgent need for assistance to help those who had lost their livelihoods and called for a thorough investigation into the cause of the fire.
He also urged traders to refrain from cooking in the market, cautioning that the use of gas cylinders contributed to the disaster.
The fire, which spread rapidly through the market, was fueled by highly flammable materials stored in the shops. Firefighters faced difficulties containing the inferno due to obstructed access routes and delayed response times. Some traders attributed the incident to ongoing power outages, which they suspect may have triggered the fire.
Mahama’s visit was met with gratitude, as traders welcomed his show of support during their time of distress.
