Former President John Dramani Mahama has instructed the Finance Minister to allocate funds for the commencement of phase two of the Blekusu Sea Defence Project to mitigate the impact of tidal waves and flooding in coastal communities.
During a visit to Agavedzi in the Volta Region, Mahama assessed the widespread destruction caused by recent flooding, which has displaced hundreds of residents in Salakope, Amutinu, and Agavedzi.
Recognizing the urgency of the situation, he assured affected communities of swift action.
“I am going to ask the Finance Minister to include funding to start phase two of the Blekusu Sea Defence Project,” Mahama announced.
He also highlighted a two-pronged approach to addressing the crisis: “There are two things we need to do—start building phase two of the defence wall and, at the same time, resettle those whose houses have been affected. So we will look for a more suitable site for the resettlement project.”
The initiative aims to provide both immediate relief and long-term protection for residents vulnerable to coastal erosion and flooding.
