The chiefs of Ablekuma Joma are calling on the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, to establish a police barrier on the Ablekuma Joma road to address the growing menace of reckless pragyia riders in the area.
According to Nii Okai Fontomfrom l, Asafoatse of Ablekuma Joma, the pragyia riders have become a major problem, often driving recklessly and engaging in violent altercations with passengers who complain about their behavior.
He cited a recent incident where a passenger was severely beaten by a pragyia rider over a minor disagreement, and the rider’s colleagues joined in to attack the passenger, causing the passenger to collapse.
Asafoatse Nii Okai Fontomfrom emphasized that many of the pragyia riders are underage and lack driving licenses, contributing to their reckless behavior on the roads. “We are appealing to IGP to deploy a 24-hour police barrier at Borkorborkor to check the riders and arrest those who flout the law.”
Naa Dede Nyomowoko 1, Queen Mother of Ablekuma Joma, alleged that some of the pragyia riders carry cutlasses and often use them to attack passengers who complain about their bad behavior or ask for items left in the vehicle.
She urged individuals who employ pragyia riders to ensure they hire only licensed and experienced operators. She expressed concern that some riders are very young and lack experience.
Naa Adokor, Joma Djaasyen, emphasized that some pragyia riders lack driving licenses, leading to reckless driving and overloading. When passengers complain, it often escalates into conflict.
She also noted that some riders’ unkempt appearance, including their hair, deters passengers from using their services. She appealed to the IGP to intervene and help the community by establishing a police barrier to curb the menace.
