Minister of Education Haruna Iddrisu has proposed the introduction of a nationwide cultural dress day for Ghanaian students, inspired by President John Dramani Mahama’s recent appearance in a fugu during his visit to Zambia—a moment he described as a powerful expression of national pride.
Speaking at the Global Closing Ceremony of the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ2025), Mr. Iddrisu praised the unprecedented international recognition President Mahama received during the visit.
“President Mahama received the best honours that I have ever witnessed for a visiting president to another republic,” he said.
Emphasising the importance of promoting Ghanaian cultural heritage, Mr. Iddrisu suggested that the moment could serve as a catalyst for fostering indigenous culture, particularly among young people.
“Maybe that reminds us—and probably I should ask the Director General of GES—to declare that on a day called ‘OUR DAY,’ every Ghanaian learner must wear culturally appropriate attire. This will allow each culture and society to reflect its values and traditions as we observe it nationwide,” he proposed.
If implemented, the initiative would see students across the country dressing in traditional attire representative of their ethnic heritage.
The proposed measure aims to promote cultural awareness, strengthen national unity, and ensure that Ghanaian traditions are celebrated and respected within the education system.
