The National Communications Authority (NCA) has suspended three radio stations belonging to Wontumi Multimedia Company Limited, owned by Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, over breaches of Ghana’s broadcasting regulations.
The affected stations — 95.9 FM in Accra, 101.3 FM in Kumasi, and 101.3 FM in Takoradi — were cited for failing to address violations, including the unauthorised use of Studio-to-Transmitter Link (STL) frequencies and broadcasting from unapproved transmitter sites.
The suspensions follow the expiration of a 30-day grace period granted by President John Dramani Mahama to allow defaulting stations nationwide to rectify regulatory breaches. According to the NCA, Wontumi Multimedia did not fully comply within the amnesty period, prompting the enforcement action.
The authority said the sanctions were imposed under Regulation 54 of the Electronic Communications Regulations, 2011 (L.I. 1991), which prohibits operating without a valid Certificate of Compliance.
In addition to the Wontumi Multimedia outlets, six other radio stations across the country were shut down after failing to take corrective measures during the grace period.
The NCA reaffirmed its commitment to monitoring the broadcasting sector to ensure adherence to licensing requirements and the laws governing FM radio operations in Ghana.
