NAIMOS arrests suspected illegal miners after clash in Central Region
The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has arrested several suspected illegal miners following an enforcement operation at Subin Akwaaboso in the Central Region on Sunday, November 1, 2026.
The operation, carried out by NAIMOS personnel in collaboration with members of the Special Boat Squadron (SBS), reportedly faced resistance from a group of individuals allegedly armed with cutlasses, firearms and other offensive weapons.
In a statement issued on Monday, November 2, the Secretariat said the confrontation posed security risks to its personnel and others present at the scene.
According to NAIMOS, the enforcement team, led under the direction of its Director of Operations, Colonel K. S. Appiah, exercised maximum restraint while taking steps to prevent the situation from escalating.
The Secretariat warned that individuals suspected of attacking its officers or obstructing lawful enforcement activities would be referred to the appropriate authorities for further action.
It stressed that its operations would continue to be conducted within the confines of the law, with necessary and proportionate measures taken to protect its personnel, accompanying journalists and members of the public.
NAIMOS also appealed to community leaders and residents to cooperate with anti-illegal mining teams and direct any concerns or grievances through the appropriate channels.
The Secretariat reaffirmed its commitment to combating illegal mining, adding that it would continue working with security agencies, regulatory institutions and local communities, with support from the government and the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, to protect the environment and sustain progress in the fight against illegal mining.
