Man lynched in Assin Akrofuom over alleged theft; one arrested

A 31-year-old man, identified as Kofi Amankwa, has been beaten to death at Assin Akrofuom in the Central Region after being accused of theft.

The primary suspect in the incident, locally known as “Yaw Forest,” is currently in police custody and is scheduled to be arraigned before the Assin Fosu District Court today.

The circumstances leading to Amankwa’s death remain subject to conflicting reports between the suspect and the deceased’s family.

Speaking to reporter Alfred Amoh, the deceased’s sister, Ama Bimpoma, stated that her brother was tied to a pole with a rope and brutally assaulted by the suspect until he collapsed and died.

According to Bimpoma, the violent attack was triggered by allegations that Amankwa had stolen coconut seedlings belonging to the suspect.

However, police reports indicate a different motive presented by the accused.

Confirming the incident to Adom News, the Central North Regional Crime Officer, Chief Supt. Agyemang Badu, revealed that the suspect turned himself in to the police following the incident.

In his official caution statement, the suspect claimed he confronted and killed Amankwa after catching him stealing a half-bag of cocoa beans, contradicting the family’s account regarding the stolen items.

Chief Supt. Agyemang Badu confirmed that the suspect is undergoing processing and will appear in court today in Assin Fosu to face formal charges while investigations into the exact cause and timeline of events continue.

Police have urged members of the public to refrain from taking the law into their own hands and to report all criminal activities or disputes to the appropriate security authorities.
