Ghanaian Afrobeats star King Promise has spoken out about the backlash he faced after making inaccurate claims about the population sizes of Ghana and Nigeria’s commercial hub, Lagos.
The singer came under intense criticism in October 2025 after a viral video showed him telling Nigerian streamer Peller that “Lagos is bigger than Ghana.”
The comment triggered widespread reactions on social media, with many users calling out the Paris hitmaker over the statement.
King Promise later responded to the controversy by sharing a photo of himself holding a geography book, seemingly acknowledging the error.
Opening up about the picture, King Promise, in an interview with Hitz FM, stated, “I was learning. I was fixing my geography knowledge. It was Mr Eazi’s idea.”
Speaking on the comment he made, King Promise stated that he meant it as a harmless statement he had always heard as a child and did not intend to undermine Ghana in any way.
“I didn’t expect it to go the way it went. It was a harmless take. I felt like it’s something that we’ve all heard growing up. But I didn’t mean it,” he said.
He clarified his comment, stating that, “I was speaking in terms of Nigeria being bigger than Ghana population-wise, which is why their artistes have the wider international reach.”
