Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has accepted full responsibility for the disruptions that occurred during the vetting of ministerial nominees last week.
Addressing Parliament on February 4, 2025, Afenyo-Markin acknowledged the chaotic scenes that sparked public concern.
He appealed to Speaker Alban Bagbin to reconsider his decision regarding the fallout from the incident. This marked a shift from the Minority’s earlier position that the Speaker had acted beyond the Standing Orders of the House.
“Mr. Speaker, I take full responsibility as a leader on my side for all actions that took place. I, therefore, conclude by inviting you, Mr. Speaker, to, in the circumstances and with the assurance given, consider rescinding the decision you communicated to the House, as well as all consequential matters thereto,” he stated.
The Majority Leader also urged a more conciliatory approach to resolving the aftermath of the disturbances.
The chaotic vetting session, characterized by heated exchanges, prompted Speaker Bagbin to establish a special committee to investigate the matter. Additionally, four MPs from both the Minority and Majority sides were suspended as a result of the altercation.
The suspended MPs included the two Chief Whips Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor (Minority) and Frank Annoh-Dompreh (Majority) as well as Alhassan Sulemana Tampuli and Jerry Ahmed Shaib.
