On Tuesday, February 4, Minority Members of Parliament (MPs) staged a protest in the House, dressed in red and black to express their displeasure over the suspension of four of their colleagues.
In a show of solidarity, the MPs chanted patriotic songs and called for the reversal of what they described as Speaker Alban Bagbin’s “unilateral” decision.
Their demonstration underscored strong opposition to the suspensions, which they deemed unfair.
The suspensions, announced on Friday, affected South Dayi MP and Majority Chief Whip Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, Frank Annoh-Dompreh (Minority Chief Whip), Alhassan Sulemana Tampuli (Gushegu MP), and Jerry Ahmed Shaib (Weija-Gbawe MP).
The four lawmakers were penalized with a two-week suspension following the chaos that erupted during the Appointments Committee session on Thursday, January 30.
In response to the situation, security has been tightened in Parliament to prevent the suspended MPs from entering the chamber.
A heavy police presence, along with barricades, has been set up at various points within the parliamentary premises as the House prepares for proceedings.
