In accordance with Asante custom, the Mampong Traditional Council and the Bretuo Dynasty have officially informed the Asantehene of the passing of Mamponghene, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II.
The announcement, made at the Manhyia Palace and led by Mamponghemaa Nana Agyakoma Difie II, marks the end of a remarkable era for one of the country’s most respected traditional leaders.
Daasebre Osei Bonsu, who until his passing served as the Vice President of the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs, held the esteemed position of the occupant of the Silver Stool, a title of immense cultural importance in the Asante Kingdom.
His role placed him second-in-command in the Ashanti traditional hierarchy, where he often represented the Asantehene in crucial matters of custom.
Born on December 31, 1939, Daasebre Osei Bonsu passed away at the age of 86 after reigning for 26 years.
Before ascending to the throne, he was known as Oswald Gyimah-Kessie. By profession, he was a lawyer and economist, and he also served as the Registrar of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.
A man of diplomacy and unwavering commitment, Daasebre Osei Bonsu’s legacy spans decades of dedicated service to his people and to the broader chieftaincy institution in Ghana.
The news of his passing was formally communicated to the Asantehene at the Manhyia Palace, underscoring the deep-rooted customs and the reverence held for royals in the Asante Kingdom.
His last public appearance was during the recent Akwasidae at Mampong, where he spoke out against the tribal divisions stirred by NDC supporters in their protest over the selection of an MCE for the Mampong Municipal Assembly.
Further details regarding his funeral arrangements will be disclosed in the coming days.
