Former DCE Credits NDC’s Victory to Consistency in Flagbearer Selection, Urges NPP to Give Bawumia a Second Chance.

Thomas Owusu Ansah, a former District Chief Executive (DCE) for Ahafo Ano South East, has attributed the opposition National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) emphatic victory in the 2024 general elections to one key factor: consistency in their flagbearer selection.

Speaking in an interview on Oyerepa Breakfast Time, Mr. Owusu Ansah noted that the NDC’s decision to retain President John Dramani Mahama as its presidential candidate played a crucial role in securing the party’s return to power.

“Coming to power from opposition, the NDC, led by Mahama, didn’t do anything extraordinary to win the 2024 elections. They did only one thing, and that was staying consistent with their choice of flagbearer. They had enough time to market John Mahama in every constituency across the country, and that strategy worked immensely in their favour,” he stated.

According to the former DCE, if the NDC had chosen a different candidate other than Mahama, the outcome of the elections could have been vastly different.

“I’m telling you that if NDC had brought another candidate apart from Mahama, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia would have won the elections. Even if NDC still managed to win, they wouldn’t have secured the overwhelming endorsement they received from the Ghanaian electorate,” he emphasised.

Mr. Owusu Ansah seized the opportunity to advise the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to adopt a similar strategy by backing Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for another presidential bid in the next general election.

“In my ideology, consistency is key. Everyone deserves a second chance, and that’s what Bawumia needs from the NPP,” he asserted.

He further suggested that the NPP should learn from the NDC’s approach and begin laying the groundwork early by maintaining a unified front around Bawumia, whom he described as a capable and visionary leader deserving of another opportunity.

The remarks by the former DCE come in the wake of widespread discussions within political circles on what led to the NPP’s loss in the 2024 elections and how the party can regroup and strategise ahead of the 2028 polls.
