Local entrepreneurs must be given control of mining sites — Former DCE backs indigenous mining companies
Former District Chief Executive (DCE) for Sekyere Central, Hon. Akuoko Frimpong, has called on the government to create more opportunities for capable local entrepreneurs to take over and manage mining concessions in the country, following the example of Engineers & Planners’ takeover of the Damang Mines.
Speaking on Oyerepa Breakfast Show with Nana Yaw Mensah Joel on Tuesday morning, Hon. Akuoko Frimpong stated that indigenous Ghanaian companies have the potential to transform the mining sector and contribute significantly to national development if given the necessary support and trust.
According to him, the successful involvement of Engineers & Planners in the mining industry demonstrates that local companies possess the expertise, competence, and commitment needed to effectively manage large-scale mining operations in Ghana.
He emphasized that unlike some foreign companies that repatriate a substantial portion of their profits, local entrepreneurs are more likely to reinvest their earnings into the Ghanaian economy, thereby creating jobs, supporting local businesses, and boosting infrastructure development.
“Mining companies like Engineers & Planners have shown that they can truly bring change to the country because whatever they gain from the mining industry is likely to be reinvested back into Ghana for the benefit of the people,” he stated during the interview.
Hon. Akuoko Frimpong further urged government policymakers to prioritize local participation in the extractive sector as part of efforts to strengthen economic growth and promote Ghanaian ownership within the mining industry.
His comments come amid growing discussions about increasing indigenous participation in Ghana’s natural resource sector and ensuring that the country derives maximum benefit from its mineral wealth.
