Former Deputy Finance Minister and Nhyiaeso MP, Dr. Stephen Amoah, has refuted claims that Kennedy Agyapong criticised the church in his recent public comments.
Speaking on Okay FM on Friday, November 14, 2025, Dr. Amoah said Kennedy Agyapong’s remarks were misunderstood and taken out of context.
He clarified that Agyapong was not attacking churches but urging them to take a more active role in tackling youth unemployment. Dr. Amoah explained that his comments were based on the longstanding contribution of religious institutions to national development.
He added that churches in Ghana have historically played a key role in expanding educational infrastructure, from basic and secondary schools to tertiary institutions.
Examples include Presbyterian Boys’ Senior High School (PRESEC), St. Augustine’s College, Holy Child School, Opoku Ware School, and tertiary institutions such as the Methodist University, among others.
“His call was simple: just as churches have built some of the country’s finest schools, they can also explore new ways to support job creation for the youth who fill their congregations,” Dr. Amoah said.
He stressed that Kennedy Agyapong’s message was not an attack on the church but a forward-looking vision encouraging collaboration between key stakeholders to create sustainable employment opportunities.
“There was nothing wrong with what he said. In fact, it is a strong national vision, bringing government, private sector, and religious bodies together to tackle youth unemployment,” he added.
Dr. Amoah urged the public to focus on the intention behind the comment rather than misinterpretations, emphasising that the remarks were meant to inspire collective action for the country’s development.
