Kasoa Dualization Highway Construction Workers Protest Over Poor Working Conditions

Hundreds of construction workers employed by Zhomei Construction, a subcontractor under Nag Fairmount Construction, have staged a demonstration at the Kasoa dualization highway project, demanding improved working conditions and better treatment.

The workers say they are calling for a 100% increase in their daily wages, which currently stand at GHS 43.00, as well as formal appointment letters to legitimise their employment.

Speaking on the challenges they face, the workers explained that they work seven days a week without any allowances. They further alleged that their employer, Zhomei Construction, has failed to provide essential safety measures, including appointment letters, safety booths, protective clothing, and helmets, and does not take responsibility when workers are injured on site.

Enock Oduro, the leader of the demonstrators, told Nana Ansah in an interview that the protest would escalate if their demands are not met.

“If the employer fails to meet our demands, we will continue the protest and may take actions that could disrupt the construction work,” he warned.

The workers’ protest highlights ongoing concerns about labour rights and safety standards in construction projects in the Kasoa area, with calls for authorities to intervene and ensure that employers provide fair wages, proper documentation, and safe working conditions.
