Renowned Ghanaian actor Kwaku Manu has appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to enact legislation aimed at addressing the growing trend of online insults directed at prominent public figures.
In a video posted on his Instagram page on May 26, 2025, while vacationing in the United States, Manu commended President Mahama for the progress made since his return to office, particularly noting the strengthening of the Ghanaian cedi against the US dollar.
Despite these achievements, Manu voiced concern over the rising culture of disrespect on social media, where some individuals target national figures with verbal abuse. He cited examples including President Mahama himself, the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and prominent businessmen such as Dr. Osei Kwame Despite, Dr. Ernest Ofori Sarpong, and Ibrahim Mahama.
“There should be a law to address this issue. Some people on social media insult prominent personalities without any regard. These ill-mannered and undisciplined individuals should face a one-year jail sentence for each insult,” he stated.

Manu’s comments have sparked mixed reactions on social media. Some users support his stance, calling for respect and decorum online, while others question the implications of such a law in a democratic society.
