Ibrahim Mahama Meets Police Management Board Over Alleged Assault; IGP Assures Justice

Ghanaian visual artist Ibrahim Mahama met with the Police Management Board at the police headquarters in Accra today as investigations into his alleged assault by police officers intensify.

The incident is reported to have occurred on March 21, involving a group believed to be part of the IGP’s Special Operations Team, known as the “Black Maria”.

Mahama expressed confidence that justice will be served, citing assurances from the Inspector General of Police (IGP) that the matter will be thoroughly investigated. “The IGP assured us we should be rest assured he will make sure that they get to the bottom of it,” Mahama said.

He noted that the police force has generally been supportive of his work, with officers often visiting his cultural projects. “We don’t have any problem,” he emphasized, adding that he hopes for justice specifically for the unit involved in the alleged assault.

DCOP Grace Ansah-Akrofi, Director of Public Affairs for the Ghana Police Service, said the IGP has assured Ibrahim Mahama that investigations into the alleged assault will continue until the matter is resolved.

“The IGP directed the Police Professional Standards Bureau to commence an investigation, and we’re doing both criminal and professional conduct investigations side by side,” she explained.

She added that the Regional Command has made progress in the investigation, taking statements and visiting the scene. The IGP has now directed the CID headquarters to take over the case and expedite investigations.

“The police are willing to work with Ibrahim Mahama throughout the investigation process, and we’re assured of a thorough investigation,” DCOP Ansah-Akrofi said.

The police official also highlighted Mahama’s cooperation with the police, noting that he has provided escorts and been a “Friend of the Police”. She appealed for calm, stating that anyone found culpable will face the law, and updates will be provided as investigations continue.
