Former Member of Parliament for Subin, Eugene Boakye Antwi, has openly expressed his desire for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to return to power in the 2028 general elections, stating that he does not wish for President John Dramani Mahama to succeed in office.
Speaking in an interview on Channel One TV on Tuesday, July 1, Boakye Antwi clarified that his comments were not rooted in ill will toward the nation, but rather in skepticism about the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s ability to effectively govern.
“I want him [Mahama] to fail. I want my party to win the 2028 elections. I don’t want him to fail as in wishing Ghana bad—but I don’t believe the NDC can achieve much of what they’ve promised,” he said.
Reflecting on his time in government, Boakye Antwi highlighted internal political dynamics as a significant challenge for any administration. He suggested the NDC would likely face similar issues with underperforming appointees and internal inefficiencies.
“I have been in government, and sometimes your own appointees work against your success. The kind of issues I saw while in office—those same individuals are in the NDC. So those challenges will carry over,” he explained.
The former MP emphasized that his lack of faith in the NDC’s economic management capabilities further fuels his hope for their underperformance, asserting that the opposition lacks the tools to turn the country’s economy around.
“I don’t want Mahama to succeed—because I want the NPP to win. And in terms of managing the economy, I don’t believe the NDC has what it takes,” he added.
