Gospel singer Broda Sammy has raised concerns about what he describes as rampant hypocrisy within the Christian community, arguing that the faith is becoming less appealing due to its rigid traditions.
Speaking in a recent interview, the candid artist called for a modification in Christianity to attract more people.
“Christianity is losing its appeal because of hypocrisy. We need to add some dynamism and modernity to make it more attractive,” Broda Sammy stated.
He criticized the inconsistency in how some Christians condemn women for wearing trousers while they adopt foreign cultural practices when they travel abroad.
“They will be in Ghana and preach against trousers, but when they go abroad, they wear anything and abandon the same Christian principles they claim to uphold. This is pure hypocrisy,” he remarked.
Broda Sammy also lamented the divisions within the gospel industry, highlighting how stereotypes and hypocrisy prevent unity among gospel musicians.
“There is no unity in the gospel industry. Instead of supporting each other, we allow division to dictate our actions,” he said.
When asked about possible collaborations with fellow gospel artists Diana Hamilton and Kofi Owusu Peprah, he made it clear that he would not initiate any projects but would be willing to work with them if they reached out.
“If they approach me, why not? But I won’t go to them first,” he affirmed.
He further criticized certain figures in the industry for selective friendships, claiming that some gospel musicians only associate with artists who speak English or share similar ideologies.
“You will see them ignoring some of us, but once you start speaking English, they suddenly become your friends. That’s the reality,” he pointed out.
During the conversation, Broda Sammy also revealed a lesser-known fact about his past. According to him, he was once a talented footballer and even captained Kumasi Asante Kotoko.
“People used to call me Sammy Tuga because of my football skills. I was a captain for Kotoko,” he disclosed.
