Ghana Water Limited has revealed that 239 illegal connections have been detected so far, with 217 of those discovered between August and December 2025.
Adam Mutawakilu , Managing Director of Ghana Water limited disclosed this at the inauguration of the GWL Revenue Enhancement Team, stating that the illegal connections have resulted in significant revenue losses, with 8.6 million Ghana Cedis in unpaid bills. Notably, 3 million of this amount is attributed to just two clients.
He emphasized that about 78% of the revenue losses are due to illegal connections, meter bypassing, billing anomalies, and water theft.
Stressing that every illegal connection translates to zero revenue, with the company incurring losses on treatment, chemicals, electricity, and revenue.
To him, every illegal connection results in loss bills, loss chemicals, loss electricity, and loss revenue, undermining fairness in the system and putting pressure on low-abiding customers.
This situation is simply unsustainable. While enforcement is crucial, it’s not the only answer – compliance must be easy and convenient, which is why we’re focusing on digital transformation and customer convenience.
