The government has released GH¢809 million to the contractor working on the Pokuase–Nsawam Highway, paving the way for the resumption of long-delayed repair works on the busy stretch.
The Controller and Accountant General, Kwasi Agyei, confirmed that the payment was completed on August 4, 2025, following weeks of public outcry over the stalled project.
“On July 24, we made part payment; on July 30, another tranche; and on August 4, the final payment. Altogether, we have honoured the request in full, amounting to about GH¢809 million,” Agyei said at a media briefing.
Work on the highway had halted for several weeks, causing heavy gridlock and severe discomfort for commuters. With the release of funds, contractors have returned to site, bringing relief to thousands of road users.
The Member of Parliament for Amasaman, Sedem Afenyo, welcomed the payment, describing it as a step forward in ensuring the project’s completion.
“Some weeks back, we met with the engineer and the three MCEs affected by this road and were assured that action would be taken. I want to believe the payments have now been made, and with the assurances I’ve received, I hope we do not see the work stalled again,” he said.
The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) had earlier issued a one-week ultimatum to government, threatening to suspend operations if the contractor failed to return to site. That deadline is set to expire on Wednesday, August 20, 2025.
The Pokuase–Nsawam Highway is a key transit route linking Accra to other parts of the country, and its timely completion remains a major concern for residents, commuters, and transport operators.
