Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has reiterated the government’s commitment to modernising and expanding Ghana’s transport system to improve mobility and reduce the daily hardships faced by commuters.
Her assurance follows reports of congestion at transport terminals and an inadequate supply of commercial vehicles, which have contributed to delays and, in some cases, unfair treatment of passengers.
Speaking at a stakeholder engagement with transport sector operators on Friday, January 16, the Vice President said the government is focused on building an efficient, safe and affordable transport network that meets the needs of the public.
She noted that the administration is placing equal emphasis on strengthening both public and private transport operations to ensure reliable and accessible services across the country.
As part of short- to medium-term measures, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang announced plans to provide new high-capacity buses to operators such as Metro Mass Transit, Ayalolo and private transport unions to help expand passenger services and ease pressure on existing fleets.
She also disclosed that government has directed the rapid repair of broken-down buses to enable their prompt return to service.
“His Excellency has directed that support be given to Metro Mass, Ayalolo and the private sector through the provision of high-occupancy buses to augment services. Vehicles that require repairs will also be fixed quickly so they can be redeployed,” she stated.
Beyond the provision of infrastructure and equipment, the Vice President called on transport operators to maintain high standards of professionalism and to treat passengers with respect and dignity.
She stressed that improving public transportation is not only about increasing the number of vehicles on the roads, but also about responsible service delivery that restores public confidence and ensures a better commuting experience for all Ghanaians.
