GMet predicts continued Coastal rain, Inland thunderstorms

The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has forecast more rainfall along Ghana’s coastline, including Accra, on Thursday, with thunderstorms expected to develop later in the day across the middle, transition and northern parts of the country.

In its 18-hour weather outlook, valid from 6:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 2, GMet said slight to moderate rain is expected over coastal areas and parts of the Oti Region during the morning, with intermittent showers likely to continue into the evening.

The Agency also warned that mist and fog could reduce visibility in forest and mountainous areas during the early hours of the day.

For Accra, GMet estimates a 40 per cent chance of rainfall throughout much of the day, with temperatures expected to range between 25°C and 30°C. The northern parts of the country are forecast to record the highest temperatures, reaching up to 34°C.

The latest forecast comes just days after Monday’s devastating floods, which claimed 12 lives and displaced more than 38,800 people, according to Interior Minister Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak. Addressing Parliament, he said 7,761 households across 25 communities were affected by the disaster.

GMet noted that Monday’s rainfall measured 169 millimetres, making it the fourth-highest daily rainfall total recorded in Ghana since 1995.

With more rain expected, the Agency has raised the coastal risk level to “Be Prepared”, the second-highest alert on its warning scale, urging residents, particularly in Accra and other flood-prone coastal communities, to remain vigilant and take the necessary precautions against possible flooding.
