The Governing Council of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the nation’s border security.
During a recent working visit to the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) in Accra, Council Chairman Rev. Stephen Wengam assured the public that the Service is dedicated to safeguarding Ghana’s borders and will implement enhanced security measures at all entry points.
Rev. Wengam announced that the Council will soon launch an initiative to mobilize support from both public and private sectors to enhance the Service’s operational capacity, addressing pressing logistical and infrastructural needs.
He emphasized that relying solely on government funding is insufficient, necessitating innovative approaches to resource mobilization.
Deputy Commissioner of Immigration (Dr) Noah Ahomka Yeboah, Regional Commander, highlighted the Service’s crucial role in national revenue generation and outlined challenges facing GIS, including inadequate office space, staff accommodation, vehicle shortages, and limited access to essential border management tools.
The visit included a staff durbar, providing officers with an opportunity to voice concerns directly to the Governing Council.
Comptroller-General of GIS, Mr. Samuel Basentale Amadu, condemned recent violence against Immigration officers and called for community support in maintaining peace and stability.
The Council’s visit underscores GIS’s commitment to securing Ghana’s borders and enhancing operational effectiveness through collaborative efforts and resource mobilization.
