A renowned historian at the Manhyia Palace, Teacher Osei Bons Sarfo-Kantanka, has challenged the popular reference to Ghana as “Ama Ghana,” stating that it is historically inaccurate.
According to him, Ghana’s independence, which was declared on March 6, 1957, did not occur on a Tuesday, as widely believed, but rather on a Wednesday.
Based on the Akan naming system, he argues that the correct reference should be “Akua Ghana” instead of “Ama Ghana.”
In a conversation with journalist Kwesi Parker Wilson, on Oyerepa Breakfast Time, Teacher Kantanka emphasized the need for historical accuracy in how Ghanaians refer to the country’s independence.
“We should rather say ‘Akua Ghana,’ not ‘Ama Ghana,’ because the day Ghana gained independence was Wednesday, not Tuesday,” he stated.
