The Ghana Education Service (GES) has extended its deepest condolences to the Lawra Senior High School community following the tragic loss of seven of its students in a canoe accident on the Black Volta River.
In a press statement issued on Monday, June 16, 2025, the GES described the incident as a heartbreaking moment not only for the school but for the entire nation. The accident occurred on the morning of Saturday, June 14, when 16 second-year cadet corps students embarked on a routine jogging exercise under the supervision of their patron. Ten of the students attempted to cross the Black Volta River near Dikpe using a canoe, which capsized mid-journey.
Seven students—five girls and two boys—tragically lost their lives, while three others were rescued. With the help of NADMO, the Ghana Police Service, the school authorities, and a search team from the Lawra community, the bodies of all seven students were successfully retrieved.
The GES assured the public that it is working in close collaboration with Regional and District Directors of Education, school authorities, and security agencies to investigate the incident and provide the necessary support to the affected families. Survivors are currently receiving psychological and emotional care on campus.
“The safety and well-being of our students is of utmost importance,” the statement read, adding that steps are being taken to strengthen safety protocols and prevent such tragedies in the future.
GES further emphasized that despite the tragedy, Lawra SHS remains a safe learning environment and urged parents and guardians to remain calm.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families, the Lawra SHS community, and all affected by this heartbreaking tragedy. May the souls of the departed rest in perfect peace,” the statement concluded.
