The Minister for Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has met with leaders of key unions in Ghana’s tertiary education sector—namely, the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), the Technical University Teachers Association of Ghana (TUTAG), and the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG)—to provide updates on ongoing payroll reforms and an audit being conducted by the Auditor-General.
The meeting followed a formal request from the unions concerning the disbursement of the Book and Research Allowance.
Dr. Ato Forson informed the union leaders that initial findings from the payroll audit have revealed a significant number of ghost names, indicating payroll irregularities within the public sector.
He emphasized that addressing these anomalies could lead to substantial savings for the state and contribute to better fiscal management.
The Finance Minister appealed to the unions to support the national payroll audit initiative, stressing that their cooperation is vital to ensuring transparency and accountability in public sector compensation.
