Shatta Wale storms GoldBod with Medikal; proposes entertainment partnership
Ghanaian dancehall star Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jr., popularly known as Shatta Wale, has expressed interest in partnering with the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) to promote locally manufactured jewellery and connect Ghana’s creative industry with corporate brands.
The musician made the proposal during a visit to the Acting Chief Executive Officer of GoldBod, Sammy Gyamfi, where he was accompanied by Ghanaian rapper Samuel Adu Frimpong, known as Medikal.
The meeting formed part of efforts by Shatta Wale to explore possible collaborations with institutions supporting Ghana-made products, particularly GoldBod’s “Made in Ghana Jewellery” initiative, which seeks to promote locally produced gold ornaments.
Speaking during the engagement, Shatta Wale thanked Sammy Gyamfi for welcoming them and explained that the purpose of their visit was to build a working relationship that would benefit both the creative sector and corporate Ghana.
“Honorable, thank you. We just want to say God bless you once again for honouring us. You know, for people from the streets, sometimes we also just need a collaboration like this. And we literally came here for a collaboration. I’ve been discussing with my brother the things we’ve been seeing you do in Ghana and how hard you are working. I was recently telling him that even though we wanted to come and see you for other stuff, we also wanted to be a part of your team,” he said.
The “Taking Over” hitmaker said he became interested in GoldBod’s jewellery campaign after seeing the quality of locally made products, adding that Ghanaian artistes could play a major role in marketing such products internationally.
According to him, the partnership would also support his upcoming Shattafest event in the United Kingdom while creating opportunities for entertainers to work with major institutions.
“When I saw the jewellery, I was just crazy about it. I was like, ‘No, we need to come and see you and discuss and have a good understanding of it.’ So basically we’re here for our Shattafest that we’re going to do in the UK, and also to ask for a little collaboration where we can merge the streets with the corporate world,” Shatta Wale stated.
The dancehall artiste noted that many creatives often shy away from seeking partnerships with corporate organisations, but he wants to encourage more collaboration between both sides.
He further revealed his interest in supporting GoldBod’s jewellery campaign as an ambassador, arguing that promoting Ghanaian jewellery could improve the country’s image on the global stage.
“I believe most of the time we get scared to approach people like your team. But I want to break that yoke and make sure we can also call on you people when we need support. Apart from that, we also want to be part of your jewellery project. He likes jewellery, I like jewellery, but I was telling him if we have to get the proper jewellery to wear and sell Ghana properly, this is the way to go,” he added, referring to Medikal.
Shatta Wale concluded by formally presenting their interest in working with GoldBod and stressed the importance of building bridges between Ghana’s entertainment industry and businesses.
The meeting comes amid growing calls for stronger partnerships between Ghanaian creatives and local institutions to promote made-in-Ghana products, culture and businesses beyond the country’s borders.
