A tragic highway robbery on the Ntotroso-Sunyani road in the Bono Region has left a commercial driver dead and two passengers injured, renewing concerns over security and infrastructure in the area.
The incident occurred last Friday while the driver, whose identity is yet to be confirmed, was transporting passengers from Sunyani to Bibiani in a Ford vehicle. According to Richard Adu, the Assemblyman for the Atronie Electoral Area, the driver was shot in the head during the attack.
The victim’s body has since been deposited at the Sunyani Teaching Hospital morgue, while the two injured passengers are currently receiving treatment at the same facility.
The Ntotroso-Sunyani road, which connects the Bono and Ahafo regions, has long been in a state of disrepair. Residents say its deteriorated condition has made it a prime target for highway robbers, who strike with increasing boldness and impunity.
Frightened residents and commuters who spoke to Adom News described the route as a “death trap,” citing frequent armed attacks that have disrupted daily life and economic activity.
A female farmer from Atronie lamented the impact of the insecurity, saying she and her fellow farmers now avoid their farmlands out of fear for their lives. “The gunshots and robberies have become too common. We can’t even go to our farms anymore,” she said.
The community is now urgently appealing to the government to rehabilitate the road, which was originally constructed during the administration of former President John Agyekum Kufuor. They argue that fixing the road would not only improve transportation but also curb the spate of armed robberies by making the area more accessible to security patrols.
Residents believe that the security agencies are aware of the recurring nature of the robberies and blame the worsening situation on the continued neglect of the road infrastructure.
As fear mounts, the community is calling on authorities to prioritize both road rehabilitation and security enforcement to prevent further loss of life and restore confidence among road users.
