Ghanaian Hip-Life artist and songwriter, Donzy Chaka, has cautioned against constant comparisons between the Ghanaian and Nigerian music industries, stressing that such debates do not benefit Ghana’s creative space.
Speaking on Oyerepa Entertainment Review hosted by Francisca Intsiful, Donzy argued that Nigeria’s dominance in the global music scene is largely due to its strong sense of unity, larger population, and relentless effort to push their own talents onto the international stage.
“If we were to compare Ghana music to that of Nigeria, it’s obvious we are far behind them. For this reason, let’s not compare our music with theirs. Let’s focus our attention on our own and keep pushing. It should not always be about Ghana and Nigeria because the Nigerians are pushing their own to the world. So let’s make our own music our biggest priority and push it for others to also hold and take it to the world,” he said.
The “Crusade” hitmaker emphasised that promoting Ghanaian music should not be left solely in the hands of musicians. He called on the media, presenters, and other stakeholders to actively champion Ghana’s sound and culture, just as Nigerians consistently do for theirs.
“It should not be only musicians pushing it. Everyone must be involved — the media, presenters, and all key players have a role. When we push our music, the Nigerians will also talk about us. Let’s not compare ourselves to them because their population alone ‘kills’ us, and they believe in their own,” he added.
Donzy concluded by urging unity and collective responsibility in elevating Ghanaian music on the global stage, warning that continuous comparisons with Nigeria would only distract from the real work needed.
“So comparing Ghana music to Nigeria wouldn’t help us as a nation,” Donzy advised.
