The Accra High Court has rejected an application by Bernard Antwi Boasiako, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), widely known as Chairman Wontumi, to lift a freezing order placed on a bank account belonging to one of his companies.
The application sought to reverse the Financial Intelligence Centre’s (FIC) decision to freeze the account of Paradise Insurance. However, the court declined the request and adjourned the matter sine die.
The bank accounts of Chairman Wontumi and his company, Akonta Mining, were frozen by the FIC in April 2025 as part of investigations into alleged financial irregularities.
The action was carried out under Section 56(1) of the Anti-Money Laundering Act, 2020 (Act 1044), which authorises the FIC to restrict access to accounts where there is reasonable suspicion of money laundering or other illicit financial activities.
The freezing order is linked to ongoing criminal proceedings against Chairman Wontumi, arising from alleged breaches of Ghana’s mining laws.
