Communities must stand against environmental degradation — Asiedu Nketia

National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has called on communities across the country to take an active role in protecting the environment by resisting activities and influences that threaten natural resources.

Addressing hundreds of members of the United Cadres’ Front (UCF) and NDC supporters at a gathering in Kumasi, Mr. Asiedu Nketia stressed that local communities are the first line of defence in safeguarding forests, water bodies, and lands from degradation.

He urged citizens to recognise the value of their environment and oppose any political, economic, or foreign influence that could contribute to its destruction.

According to him, communities must be prepared to challenge and reject actions that undermine environmental sustainability through collective physical, mental, and social resistance.

Mr. Asiedu Nketia identified blind political loyalty, public apathy, selfish interests, and participation in illegal activities such as galamsey, illegal fishing, sand winning, logging, and chain sawing as major contributors to environmental degradation.

He further called on Unit Committees to take a leading role in enforcing environmental bye-laws and maintaining discipline at the grassroots level. Drawing parallels with the former People’s Defence Committees (PDCs), he said local structures must be empowered to help protect communities and natural resources.

The NDC Chairman underscored the need for collective responsibility in preserving the environment for future generations.

The event, held under the theme “Ensuring Transparent Governance: The Role of Cadres,” provided an opportunity for members of the UCF to reflect on their principles, achievements, and future direction.

General Secretary of the NDC, Fiifi Fiavi Kwetey, also addressed the gathering, highlighting the importance of recruiting more young people into the cadre movement and instilling in them the values of selflessness, sacrifice, and service.

He noted that individuals nurtured through cadre principles are less likely to engage in corrupt practices because of their strong ethical foundation.

Mr. Kwetey reaffirmed his commitment to expanding and strengthening the cadre base to support the party and future NDC governments.

Also speaking at the event, Frank Amoakohene praised the United Cadres’ Front for its dedication and contribution to the NDC’s victory in the 2024 general elections.

He said the group played a crucial role in mobilising support and campaigning under challenging conditions, helping the party secure widespread backing before and during the elections.
