Daniel Nii Arde Tagoe, Chief of Staff to the James Town Paramount Chief and Presiding Elder of the Church of Pentecost, Mamprobi District, Bethel-Sempe, has issued a stern warning to traditional leaders against allowing politics to compromise their dignity and authority.
Speaking during an Easter celebration at the Church of Pentecost Mamprobi District Bethel-Sempe Accra, Tagoe emphasized that chieftaincy should remain neutral and not be swayed by partisan politics.
He cautioned that when chiefs align themselves with specific political parties, it undermines their credibility and ability to lead effectively.
According to Tagoe, the traditional institution of chieftaincy should not be associated with any political color or party. “I am NPP Chief, I am NDC Chief” – this is not helping in any way in the chieftaincy, he stated. Chieftaincy does not know or need any political colors.
Tagoe lamented that in the past, politicians would often seek the guidance and intervention of chiefs during times of difficulty, but now, some chiefs have compromised their dignity by aligning themselves with politicians.
“Some of the chiefs have sold their dignity to politicians, and now they cannot speak out when something is going wrong because their fingers are in their mouths,” he said.
Tagoe urged traditional leaders to maintain their independence and resist the temptation to be swayed by partisan politics. He emphasized that chiefs must be able to speak out against injustice and wrongdoing without fear or favor, and that their authority should be respected and protected.
