The Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) has strongly condemned the recent surge in post-election violence, hooliganism, and vandalism in Ghana.
This disturbing trend has been observed in the aftermath of the December 7, 2024, general elections, with reports of attacks on state officials and properties, as well as the occupation of public facilities.
CDD-Ghana is urging the government to take immediate action to address this growing tendency, which threatens the peace and stability of the country. The organization is calling on law enforcement authorities to apply the laws of Ghana firmly and without bias to prevent further violence.
Notably, Ghana has made significant progress in its democratic journey since 1992, with the recent elections reflecting steady incremental progress. However, the persistence of post-election violence and hooliganism undermines efforts to build a stable democratic order.
To address this issue, CDD-Ghana proposes that future Transition Teams prioritize addressing and containing post-election partisan violence and hooliganism.
The organization also recommends that offenders be held accountable under the Vigilantism and Related Offences Act (2019), which has helped to mitigate hooliganism in the past.
