The Ghana Police Service has launched an investigation into a robbery incident in Labone after a key suspect died during a police operation in the Central Region.
According to police, on January 30, 2026, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohunu, referred a petition filed by 77-year-old Labone resident Madam Christiana Frimpong to the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit (AARU) of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters.
In her petition, Madam Frimpong alleged that on December 4, 2025, she was attacked in her bedroom by armed assailants who tied her hands and legs and covered her face with a plastic bag. The attackers stole her Toyota Hilux pickup (registration GW 9834-25), an iPhone 16 Pro Max, and other personal belongings.
Following weeks of investigations, a police team led by ASP James Atampuri located a suspect, Clement Kofi Aidoo, also known as Yaw, Paddy, and Joseph Abequaye, in Danso near Bawjiase, Awutu Senya District, in the early hours of February 6, 2026.
Police reported that the suspect attempted to escape by jumping through a window while wielding a cutlass and threatening the officers. In the ensuing confrontation, he was shot and critically injured, later being pronounced dead at the Police Hospital. His body has been deposited at the hospital morgue for autopsy.
During the operation, officers recovered the stolen Toyota Hilux, several documents, and Madam Frimpong’s mobile phone. They also seized a Voter ID card and a Police ID card belonging to No. 48935 G/Sgt Daniel Kusi Appiah, which are being retained as evidence.
G/Sgt Appiah, stationed at the Kaneshie Divisional Headquarters, was subsequently invited to the AARU for questioning. In his statement, he explained that in November 2025, while seeking a house help for his ailing father, he was introduced to the suspect through KKN Domestic and Recruitment Agency at Bubuashie.
The suspect reportedly began working at his residence on November 1, 2025, but allegedly absconded on November 14, 2025, taking with him a Toyota Camry (registration GC 123-12), police and voter ID cards, GH¢12,200, and other personal items. Investigations revealed the suspect’s real name to be Joseph Obessi, also known as Paddy, a native of Bontroase in the Central Region.
On January 25, 2026, the suspect was reportedly spotted driving the stolen Toyota Camry in Bontroase. A police pursuit ensued, but he abandoned the vehicle at Kojoacquah Village and escaped.
The police continue their investigations into the Labone robbery and related offences.
