Bawumia restructures personal office, appoints Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu as Chief of Staff

The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mahamudu Bawumia, has announced a major restructuring of his personal office, appointing former Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, as Chief of Staff.

The appointment places the veteran politician at the centre of Dr. Bawumia’s political and organisational structure as the NPP begins preparations for the 2028 general elections.

A seven-term Member of Parliament for Suame, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu is widely regarded as one of the most experienced legislators in Ghana’s Fourth Republic, having served in Parliament from January 1997 to January 2025. Over the years, he held key leadership positions, including Minority Leader, Majority Leader, and Minister for Parliamentary Affairs.

His appointment is seen as a strategic move aimed at strengthening Dr. Bawumia’s campaign architecture following the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 general elections. As Chief of Staff, he is expected to play a pivotal role in coordinating political strategy, party mobilisation, and campaign operations.

Known for his extensive experience, strong grassroots connections, and deep institutional knowledge of the party, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu is expected to provide critical leadership as the NPP seeks to rebuild and reposition itself ahead of the next electoral cycle.

Beyond Ghana’s borders, he has also held notable international positions, serving as Vice Chairman of the Global Organization of Parliamentarians Against Corruption and as Deputy Chairperson of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association.

Dr. Bawumia also announced several other appointments to his reorganised team. Former Member of Parliament for Suhum, Frederick Opare-Ansah, will serve as Director in Charge of Identifiable Activities, while Peter Mac Manu has been appointed Director in Charge of Political Strategy.

Other key appointments include Fred Oware as Political Advisor, Nana Akomea as Director in Charge of Communication and Branding, and Kojo Oppong Nkrumah as Head of Policy Coordination, assisted by Evon Hughes.

In addition, Anthony Abayifa Karbo has been tasked with Organisation and Youth Inclusion, while Dr. Ekua Amoako will serve as the campaign’s spokesperson.

The restructuring signals Dr. Bawumia’s early efforts to build a formidable political team and lay the groundwork for the NPP’s campaign strategy ahead of the 2028 elections.
