The Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, has urged members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to close ranks and work together to reclaim power from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2028 general elections.
In a video circulating on social media, Mr. Assafuah appealed to party supporters to put aside their individual preferences and unite behind whoever emerges as the NPP’s flagbearer after the upcoming national delegates conference.
He noted that the party’s strength lies in its unity, stressing that both leading contenders — former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong — deserve respect and support from members once the internal contest concludes.
“Some people here support Bawumia, others support Ken, and that’s fine because we are all NPP members,” Mr. Assafuah said. “Anyone who knows my political background knows that I am close to NAPO, and since NAPO is close to Ken, I am also close to Ken. But that doesn’t mean I will automatically support him — and I will never speak ill of him either.”
He stressed that the party’s collective focus should be on winning the 2028 polls, warning that failure to do so could have far-reaching political implications.
“After the elections, we need everyone on board to ensure we win the 2028 election. If we fail, we will have His Excellency Asiedu Nketiah as president,” he cautioned.
Although NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah has not formally announced plans to contest the 2028 election, growing speculation suggests he could be positioned to succeed President John Dramani Mahama as the NDC’s next presidential candidate.
These speculations have been fueled by Mr. Nketiah’s recent 16-region nationwide tour to thank delegates following the NDC’s victory in the 2024 general elections.
Mr. Assafuah’s call for unity adds to a growing chorus within the NPP urging reconciliation and renewed focus as the party prepares to regroup after its electoral defeat.
