A senior lecturer at Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (AMUSTED), Mr. Aaron Kumah, has said the government should allow illegal miners (galamsayers) to do their work.
According to him, the government can’t fight galamsey, so it should allow them to do it.
“The galamsay, we can’t stop it, so I will plead with the government to allow them to do their work because they can’t fight it,” the lecturer said on Oyerepa TV’s “Ghana Te sen ?” show.
His comment was in reaction to the return of the Chinese Galamsey Queen, Aisha Huang, to Ghana.
The 47-year-old ‘galamsey’ kingpin, Aisha Huang, who was deported in 2019, is back in Ghana and mining without a license. She has been re-arrested and remanded by the Accra Circuit Court.
The Chinese national evaded immigration authorities and re-entered Ghana via the eastern land border, i.e., Togo, to conduct illegal business despite her controversial deportation in 2018.
Aaron Kuma believes government officials were aware of Aish’s return to Ghana.
“They know Aisha is in the country. Nobody can tell me he’s not aware. The Interior Minister and the National Security Minister are aware of all of them. I am sure that President Akufo-Addo is aware that Aisha has returned to the country.” He said.
He is of the view that fighting galamsey will be difficult and urged the government to set up a taskforce for reclamation.
“The government can set up a reclamation task force so that after they are done with their work, they will do reclamation every three years in order to regain the land. The government can collect a huge tax from them for development.” He said.
