The Deputy Minority Leader in Parliament and Member of Parliament for Asokwa, Patricia Appiagyei, has emphasized that Africa’s challenge is not the absence of treaties or protocols, but the lack of full and faithful implementation.
Speaking at the Africa Prosperity Dialogue (APD) 2026, Appiagyei stressed that the continent has already agreed on the legal architecture for integration, citing the Abuja Treaty and the African Continental Treaty Agreement.
“What remains is to translate the commitments into accessible national law and a real outcome for our people,” she said.
Hon. Appiagyei emphasized the crucial role of parliamentary leadership in ensuring implementation, stating that treaties do not implement themselves and protocols do not enforce themselves.
She highlighted the importance of the African Continental Free Trade Area Dispute Settlement Mechanism and the African Court of Justice in ensuring a rule-based, single African market. “A borderless Africa must also be a law-governed Africa,” she said.
MP Appiagyei pledged her support for the “Make Africa Borderless Now” campaign, emphasizing the need for political will, legislative leadership, and disciplined implementation. “Africa has agreed. Africa has signed. Now Africa must implement,” she said.
