“We are not villagers” — Obogu youth chase Agya Koo’s Base Party Team away over ‘insult’

Tensions flared in Obogu in the Ashanti Region after a campaign visit by Ghanaian actor Alex Kofi Adu, popularly known as Agya Koo, and members of his political movement, The Base Party, reportedly ended in confrontation with sections of the youth in the area.

The incident is said to have been triggered by allegations that a member of the campaign team described the young people of Obogu as “lazy villagers” and further suggested they could be easily manipulated politically. The comment quickly sparked outrage, leading to a heated exchange between residents and the visiting team.

Agya Koo, who was leading the campaign engagement, was seen attempting to calm the situation and prevent his team member from being attacked as emotions escalated. However, the crowd insisted they felt disrespected by the remarks allegedly made about them.

“We are villagers, yet you came to solicit for our votes,” one angry youth said during the confrontation.

Another resident, visibly upset, also reacted strongly to the alleged comments, saying, “This woman said we are villagers, but she still wants us to vote for them.”

As the situation intensified, parts of the crowd were heard chanting “Away!” while reportedly driving the campaign team out of the area amid mounting tension.

Despite Agya Koo’s repeated efforts to calm tempers and appeal for understanding, some youths expressed deep mistrust toward the actor-turned-politician. One of them accused him of political inconsistency and deception, referencing his past affiliations.

“Agya Koo, you have deceived us. We have watched you from childhood till now. You have been deceiving us. You made us join the NPP, and now you want to deceive us again into joining your Base Party. We won’t understand,” he said.

While no injuries were reported, the incident has added to ongoing discussions about political messaging, respect for local communities, and the rising tension in grassroots campaigning ahead of future political engagements.
