The Member of Parliament for Weija Gbawe Constituency and 2nd Deputy Minority Whip of Parliament, Hon. Jerry Ahmed Shaib Esq., has disclosed that over 127 ambulances across the country are currently non-functional.
According to him, the situation is due to what he described as the government’s failure to properly maintain and service the ambulances.
Hon. Shaib made this revelation after cutting the sod for the construction of an Emergency and Unity Block at the Weija Gbawe Municipal Hospital. The facility is expected to include 25 male and female wards, a pharmacy, an ambulance unit, and other essential departments aimed at improving healthcare delivery in the municipality.
In an interview with Nana Ansah, the MP stated that the project fulfills a key campaign promise to his constituents. He added that the facility, once completed, will be an ultra-modern healthcare center designed to enhance emergency response and overall medical services.
He further criticized the government, alleging that ambulances procured under former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s administration have not been adequately maintained, leading to over 127 of them being out of service.
Meanwhile, the Medical Superintendent of the Weija Gbawe Municipal Hospital, Dr. David Kwabena Oppong, noted that the new facility will significantly improve the hospital’s capacity to handle emergency cases and save lives.
He also appealed for additional support and equipment to further strengthen healthcare delivery in the area.
